Why Taits?
Naturally many wonder where the name "Tait's" actually comes from. Well much like our products that are rich in flavour our business is rich in History.
John Tait and his wife immigrated to Brockville from England in the early 1900's. Tait Followed in his father - Andrew's- footsteps. Andrew Tait was an accomplished Baker in London; he was appointed a baking expert for the Central London School at Hanwell where he mixed and measured creating some of the same recipes used today! Believe it or not, The recipes were so legendary that one Andrew Tait was actually knighted by Queen Victoria!!! Figuring why not let the fine civilians of Leeds and Grenville try these "Royal" recipes, John Tait set up a bakery we now know as Taits in Brockville in wait for it.....1908! Which if our calculations are correct makes Tait's 103 years old!
The Mazurek Era
It was now 1957 and after immigrating from Poland, Bruce Mazurek purchased the business and brought Tait's into The Mazurek Family. Bruce expanded the business to include a wholesale retail aspect at which provided local supermarkets and businesses with our elegant pastries and delicious breads. 22 Years after growing the Business into a cornerstone of downtown Brockville, a ready to retire Bruce sold the business to his deserving sons John and Stephen.
As the Story then goes, one cold winter night the Brothers had an epiphany, why not combine our legendary breads with the local cuts of meat and freshly grown vegetables? BOOM, Suddenly a new era of Tait's was born as the thriving entrepreneurs added both a Deli and Catering division to the business. Accompanied in their expansion came some extraordinary renovations to the downtown location. The brothers successfully crafted the location into a cafe style look which was reported to create an old world atmosphere with modern convenience.
Modern Times
If this wasn't enough in 2006 Stephen and John sought out for a new challenge and expansion to their business. With the Uptown of Brockville going through a vast makeover it seemed like the perfect fit for an alternate location. But then there was a problem, what to name it? After months of intense debate, at last came the "clever" and "unique" name of...... Taits Uptown! Located on Parkdale Avenue in Brockville, Tait's Uptown replicates the style of our Downtown store by carrying all of the same delicious products delivered daily straight from the hands of our downtown bakers!
So there it is the story of how Brockville's beloved Bakery was born, expanded and reconstructed over the past 100 years or so, and if you did happen to read this whole thing we hope your learned a little something!
